Enhance your CV - become a part of the Northants and Bucks Junior Lawyers (NBJL) Committee

The NBJL are now looking for new Committee members to replace those leaving the Committee in February 2015.

Being part of the NBJL Committee is a great opportunity to organise events, network and socialise with other NBJL members and young professionals in the area.  It also looks pretty good on your CV!

The roles available are:

1. Chairperson;
2. Vice Chairperson;
3. Secretary;
4. Social Events Officer;
5. Career Events Officer;
6. Sponsorship Officer;
7. Website & Publicity Officer;
8. Social Media Officer;
9. Treasurer;
10. National Representative; and
11. Education Representative.


Committee Roles:

These descriptions are examples of the duties which each committee member will undertake. These
are by no means exhaustive. The NBJL committee works as a team and although we have
responsibilities to our individual roles, we are all here to help each other. Our common goal is to
deliver the best possible benefits and events to the NBJL members across Northampton,
Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.

Chairperson
Responsibilities include:
 Overseeing and organising the running of the committee
 Promoting the interests of the NBJL on various platforms (appropriate networking events,
NBJL events etc.)
 Ensuring deadlines are met in respect of all aspects of the organisation
 Acting as a spokesperson for the NBJL (save for the National Representative role)
 Organisation of the NBJL Annual Ball
 Delegation of responsibilities
 Speaking at events

Vice Chairperson
Responsibilities include:
 Assisting the Chairperson with his or her responsibilities and advising the Chairperson
(including suggestions for promoting the success of the NBJL)
 Promoting the interests of the NBJL
 Organisation of the NBJL Annual Ball
 Ensuring deadlines are met
 Acting as Chairperson in his or her absence

Secretary
Responsibilities include:
 Assisting the Chairperson with his or her responsibilities
 Planning and running committee meetings
 Preparation of minutes and agenda for meetings
 Keeping record of all meetings, events and business contacts
 Assistance with organising of the NBJL Annual Ball

Treasurer
Responsibilities include:
 Keeping an overview of the finances of the NBJL
 Keeping accurate records, including but not limited to, invoices, sponsorship monies received
and expenses paid out
 Ensuring the Events Officers and the Chairperson are aware of the budgets that need to be
set for each event
 Ensuring financial procedures and policies are followed
 Assisting the Sponsorship Officer in making him or her aware of the current budget and
providing support in obtaining sponsorship from local businesses
 Ensuring sufficient funds are available for the NBJL Annual Ball
 Reporting to the Chair/Vice Chair when necessary

Website and Publicity Officer
Responsibilities include:
 Promoting social and networking events via the website and emails
 Producing event flyers for each NBJL event (supported by the relevant Events Officer)
 Compiling an up-to-date mailing list for members and target members
 Recruiting members via target emails, letters and attending appropriate networking events
(e.g. University Careers Days etc.)
 Ensuring events and news feeds are up to date
 Assisting the Sponsorship Officer where necessary
 Liaising with the Social Media Officer where necessary
 Promoting the NBJL Annual Ball at the relevant time
 Reporting to the Chair/Vice Chair when necessary

Sponsorship Officer
Responsibilities include:
 Managing business relationships with current and prospective sponsors
 Liaising with local businesses to raise awareness of the NBJL organisation and events in a bid
to promote the NBJL and obtain further sponsorship
 Generating sponsorships to financially support the NBJL’s social/networking events, summer
balls, website and seminars
 Generating sponsorship and key sponsors for the NBJL Annual Ball
 Contacting past sponsors, prospective companies and individuals that may have an interest in
supporting the NBJL with personalised letters, emails and phone calls
 Keeping records of all communications and monies generated in respect of all sponsorship
 Drafting thank you notes/emails to be sent to all sponsors after each event and thanking
them on the day of the event
 Reporting back to the treasurer in respect of all sponsorship monies after each event
 Liaising with the Treasurer where necessary
 Reporting to the Chair/Vice Chair when necessary

Social Events Officer
Responsibilities include:
 Organisation of the NBJL Annual Ball
 Pitching social event ideas to the Chairperson/Vice to undertake throughout social year
calendar in order to facilitate the NBJL’s mission statement
 Liaising with sponsors to ascertain their precise event requirements
 Liaising with the Website and Publicity Officer to promote the event
 Producing detailed proposals for events (e.g. timelines, venues, suppliers etc.)
 Organising events within the budget set by the Treasurer
 Setting, communicating and maintaining timelines and priorities on every event
 Communicating, maintaining and developing sponsor relationships in connection with the

Sponsorship Officer
Responsibilities include:
 Managing operational and administrative functions to ensure events are delivered efficiently
 Providing leadership, direction and support to the NBJL committee
 Ensuring insurance, legal, health and safety obligations are adhered to
 Attending and welcoming NBJL members at all NBJL events

Career Events Officer
Responsibilities include:
 Liaising with sponsors to ascertain their precise seminar requirements
 Pitching career event ideas to the Chairperson/Vice to undertake throughout the year in order
to facilitate the NBJL’s mission statement
 Liaising with the Website and Publicity Officer to promote the seminar
 Producing detailed proposals for seminars (e.g. timelines, venues, suppliers etc.)
 Organising seminars and presentations within the budget set by the Treasurer
 Setting, communicating and maintaining timelines and priorities on every event
 Communicating, maintaining and developing sponsor relationships in connection with the
Sponsorship Officer
 Managing operational and administrative functions to ensure events are delivered efficiently
 Liaising with and approaching potential companies/individuals to deliver appropriate careers
talks to our NBJL members
 Providing leadership, direction and support to the NBJL committee
 Ensuring insurance, legal, health and safety obligations are adhered to
 Attending and welcoming NBJL members at all presentations, talks and seminars
 Assisting the Social Events Officer in organising the NBJL Annual Ball

JLD National Representative
Responsibilities include:
 Attending the national Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) meetings
 Promoting the success of the NBJL at a national level
 Feeding back any news, information or events to the committee
 Reporting to the Chair/Vice of the workings of other Junior Lawyers Divisions and how we
may improve our own
 Attending the JLD national ball
 Working with other junior lawyer groups to raise awareness of the organisation
 Assisting the Sponsorship Co-Ordinator and Publicity Officer in raising awareness of the NBJL
and obtaining new sponsors

Bedfordshire Representative
Responsibilities include:
 Liaising with Education Representative to target students within the Bedfordshire area
 Raise awareness of NBJL with law firms within Bedfordshire
 Attending NBJL annual ball and promoting it amongst students and young lawyers within
Bedfordshire
 Assisting the Sponsorship Co-Ordinator and Publicity Officer in raising awareness of the NBJL
and obtaining new sponsors
 Feeding back any news from Bedfordshire

Education Representative
Responsibilities include:
 Liaising with the colleges and universities around the Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire
and Bedfordshire areas and raising awareness of NBJL
 Encouraging students to become members, attend events and network with other members
 Organising a careers events day with the Career Events Officer
 Attending relevant University events (e.g. career fairs, law balls etc.)
 Promoting the NBJL Annual Ball to students
 Forwarding any sponsorship opportunities from colleges/universities to further promote the
success of the NBJL to the Sponsorship Officer
 Reporting any opportunities and success on the education front to the Chair/Vice

Social Media Officers
Responsibilities include:
 Promoting social and networking events via social media
 Ensuring events and news feeds are up to date
 Maintaining and managing the LinkedIn, Facebook Page and Twitter accounts
 Add relevant LinkedIn members (those that fall within the membership criteria within the
Northants/Bucks/Beds area) once a month
 Tweet once a week and retweet/favourite a legal news story (or anything of relevance to the
NBJL or area) to generate wider interest and promote the success of the NBJL
 Assisting the Sponsorship Officer where necessary
 Liaising with the Website and Publicity Officer where necessary
 Promoting the NBJL Annual Ball at the relevant time
 Adding each member who requests to join the NBJL on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
 Liaising with any member of the Committee that may have an NBJL update to share on
social media
 Reporting to the Chairperson any events that the NBJL may want to get involved in that
arises from social media

The deadline for applications is Friday 22 January 2015 and we will be looking to announce the new Committee shortly thereafter.
