One of the most important skills required by
those considering a career within the legal profession is the ability to
effectively interview a client. The ability to ask the right questions in order
to obtain instructions so that accurate and relevant advice can be given is a
fundamental skill which all lawyers (and many other professionals) require.
Gaining experience in client interviewing through competitions is a great way
to boost your CV and help you stand out from the crowd.
The annual University of Northampton client
interviewing competition will take place on Wednesday 18th
January (1-5pm). The competition is open to all law students,
irrespective of course and / or year of study although preference may be given
to second and third years in the event of oversubscription. Client interviewing
is conducted in pairs so if you wish to enter you will need to find a willing
partner.
A training session will be delivered by Karen
Lawson on Wednesday 11th January at 2pm (Room TBC) for those
who wish to enter but have not yet experienced client interviewing. During the
session Karen will give a short introduction to client interviewing and will
also discuss the assessment criteria for the competition.
If you wish to take part then you must email
Sophie Lomas (sophie.lomas@northampton.ac.uk) by 5pm on
Monday 9th January 2017.
The winners of the competition will go on to
represent the University of Northampton at the National Client Interviewing
Competition which begins in February. Both winners and runners up will have the
opportunity to attend a national training day which is being held at Oxford
Brookes University on 28th January 2017.
Any team who enters the competition MUST be
available on the following dates:
Wednesday 18th January: Internal
Competition
Saturday 28th January: Training Day at
Oxford Brookes University
Wednesday 8th February: Regional heat
of national competition (venue TBC)
Saturday 11th March: National Final
