Career planning tips over the Christmas break

Here are a few festive tips from Law Careers.Net for making a material improvement to your chances of launching a legal career.
If you are planning to make vacation scheme applications in the next few months:
  • Check deadlines: there are lot of them approaching. Be aware of when they are with the LCN Deadlines page
  • Be realistic about how many good applications you can make. Three good ones trumps 20 bad ones every time!
  • Research your firms in depth. You must be absolutely clear about who they are and what they do. Analysing the firm’s website is an important step. Do further searches about the firm, its clients and the business sectors it serves to give yourself the edge.
  • Prepare your evidence: write a list of things you have done that will provide evidence that you have the skills firms are looking for. Every employer requires and relies on this information, so do it properly! Use MySelf in MyLCN.
  • Check your motivations: be clear as to why you want to be a lawyer. Again, write a list of what appeals (and what doesn’t) about a legal career. If you don’t really know, why would anyone employ you?
If you are not making applications soon:

  • Do the groundwork: make sure you have researched the legal profession as a whole. What do lawyers do? Where can they be found? Who do they serve? There’s lots of this sort of information on LawCareeres.Net.
  • Know your options: be sure you know what the different career paths involve, both starting them and the career beyond. Do you want to be a Solicitor, a Barrister, or something else?
  • Think about different types of employer: law firm, chambers, in-house, government.
  • Think about different practice areas: which sound appealing?
  • Use the directory: once you genuinely understand the profession, you can get the most out of using our solicitors and barristers directories which collectively feature over 1,000 potential employers.
