The University of Law Advocacy Series - 9th February 2021...book now

Event: Advocacy Series

Date: Tuesday 9th February 2021

Time: 17:00-19:00 Part 1

The Advocacy Series will be divided into three parts:

  • Part 1: an advocacy workshop on Bail Applications and Pleas in Mitigation (this will be hands on and practical, with participants having the opportunity to try it out themselves, for those who want). It will also include some more general advocacy training;
  • Part 2: a Bail Application Competition (winner and runner up will receive a certificate - great for their legal CV);
  • Part 3: a Plea in Mitigation Competition (as above)

The exercises will be very similar to those done in Pupillage and Bar Course interviews (for example, ULaw's admission process includes a 5-minute Plea in Mitigation). These workshops are a chance to give them a go in an informal setting before having to do them 'for real'! They are essential skills for pupils and those in the first years of practice. It is highly recommended that those wishing to enter the competition attend the workshop in Part 1. This is a great opportunity for students to develop their advocacy skills prior to commencing the Bar Course, and to get a taster of what a barrister does day-to-day!
