Event: Advocacy Series
Date: Tuesday 9th February 2021
Time: 17:00-19:00 Part 1
The Advocacy Series will be divided into three parts:
- Part
1: an advocacy workshop on Bail Applications and Pleas in
Mitigation (this will be hands on and practical, with participants
having the opportunity to try it out themselves, for those who want). It
will also include some more general advocacy training;
- Part
2: a Bail Application Competition (winner and runner up will
receive a certificate - great for their legal CV);
- Part 3: a Plea in Mitigation Competition (as above)
The exercises will be very similar to those done in Pupillage and
Bar Course interviews (for example, ULaw's admission process includes a
5-minute Plea in Mitigation). These workshops are a chance to give them a go in
an informal setting before having to do them 'for real'! They are essential
skills for pupils and those in the first years of practice. It is highly
recommended that those wishing to enter the competition attend the workshop in
Part 1. This is a great opportunity for students to develop their advocacy
skills prior to commencing the Bar Course, and to get a taster of what a
barrister does day-to-day!
