Sign up to lawcareers.net - don't miss out on the latest legal news and information!

Sign up to the weekly newsletter  and receive:

  • News: We provide an ongoing news service for you, highlighting key stories from the legal press and elsewhere. The emphasis is, of course, on training and recruitment issues, but we cover all the big law stories too.

  • Meet the Recruiter: Every fortnight we delve into the mind of a recruiter to find out what they do, what makes them tick and what they are looking for in a candidate. And of course we get them to answer the all-important favourite biscuit question!

  • Burning Question: All law firms want their lawyers and their trainees to have commercial awareness. This means that you need to know what's going on in the business world. Each week we pose a burning question and ask a real lawyer or trainee to write a short answer.

  • The Oracle: We often receive requests for help and advice from future trainees and pupils. We've now formalised this process in a 'problem page' format. The Oracle will help you solve all those tricky problems relating to the recruitment process. Letters of particular interest, or letters that serve to illustrate common issues, are published in the newsletters and on the site. Whether published or not, every letter that we receive gets an answer.

  • Features: Every fortnight we publish a new feature article designed to increase your knowledge of the recruitment process or the legal profession as a whole. Some are produced in-house, others by experts from firms, chambers, universities and bodies within the legal community.

  • LC.N Diary: Many firms are travelling the country to meet candidates and raise their own profiles. By consulting our diary you'll know what events are happening near you (ie, who will be there, and when and where the events take place).

Preparing for interview (part i)

Were there any stories in the news over the last week that interested you?
Argue for/or against the right to anonymity for the defendant in rape cases.
What changes would you make to the UKs anti-terrorism laws?
Tell me about a recent legal case that interested you?

How would you handle the above questions at interview? Hopefully you would simply cast your mind back to the latest legal blog or news report that you read and calmly use this information to inform your answer. However, if reading those questions induced panic and resulted in you breaking into a cold sweat then now is the time to do something about it.

A good interview performance requires preparation. As part of that process you need to make sure you are keeping up-to-date on news and legal issues rather than hoping you can cram some key facts into your (potentially nervous) brain the night before the interview. Here are some useful websites that can help you keep your opinions informed and current affairs knowledge fresh and relevant:

It's not just news sites that can be useful, finding blogs that interest you can add an alternative angle to your research. There is also the bonus that you can get some practice at discussing issues and developing your opinion by joining the conversation. Remember to check out how reputable a blog is and their remit before you believe everything it tells you! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Of course there is literally a whole world of blogs and legal information out there. If you know of a great blog or fantastic source of online news why not share it by adding a comment to this post.

Law Careers.Net now on YouTube

LC.N has expanded its remit, they have branched out into the medium of video with their very own channel on YouTube

They recently attended the OPEN diversity event, and interviewed some of the speakers and attendees. You can watch the 15-minute piece and be televisually edified.

Look out for video clips from the participants and law firm reps who attended the CityLawLIVE event held on Saturday 25 Feb 2012.
